It was such an amazing show last night. We missed the Elvis Costello portion of the
show, but strolled in just in time for Sting and the boys to take the
stage. They looked great, and sounded
FANSTASTIC.
Even if you aren’t a fan of their music, you really should go see the show just to be a part of the history. Three guys up there just knocking it out of the park. I looked around and saw a 40 year age swing of people, all singing along to the songs and dancing in the aisles.
I will put up a few videos tonight that I took with my cheap ass camera when I get home. I asked the people next to me how much they paid for their tickets, and they paid $250. We paid $80. Amazing.
I am very excited to move forward with the book. I think it is going to be welcomed by most.

So I can now officially say that the plays I have developed work in just about any situation. Case in point, the Western Conference Championship Game 1 last night between the Lakers and Spurs.
I was able to secure tickets yesterday up in the 300 section for face value, which was a feat in itself, seeing as the game was completely “sold out”. I was searching the day before the game and prices were hovering around $125 or so for the cheapest possible seats. So to see them drop down to face value the day of the game just supports my thinking about waiting until the last moment in order to get the best prices.
But the real winner for the night was that for the first 1 ½ quarters, we got to sit in the 6th row behind the Spurs Bench. This is something that I have been doing all season long, but I thought would be pretty damn near impossible for several reasons.
I used my “season’s greetings” play to get down to my normal section, but these are the playoffs, and the tickets look completely different than they do during the regular season. This was my buddy’s first time going with me, so he just held the nachos and his beer and let me take care of getting us in. The usher spent a few extra minutes looking at my tickets, but I held fast like I knew where I was going, and sure enough, he let us through.
We started in the 11th row, but before the tip off, I noticed two seats in the 6th row that were separated by a small, 12” gap between them. This ran the whole length of the section from top to bottom. This may go unnoticed to the untrained eye, but for me it was the perfect place to sit. It was exactly in the middle of the section, and these were the only two seats available, so if anyone started coming down the isle from either direction, I knew that it would be time to implement the exit strategy. In the row directly behind us, the same two seats were available. So a very easy escape to different seats could be made without bothering anyone, and more importantly, not causing any commotion that would alert the ushers. The last thing we wanted was to cause trouble, especially since this is such a big game and we wanted to watch the whole thing.
The first quarter came and went and there we were still. AWESOME! Half way through the second quarter, the rightful owners show up and we make our quick escape up one row. This lasts for another few minutes until the owners of those seats arrived. At $600 per seat, I knew that eventually we would have to vacate that area, but for a while there it was pretty incredible.
We made our way up to section 311 where our tickets were and watched the rest of the game from there. I admit that I am a bit spoiled in my seating history, but it was still so great to be a part of the excitement there. When the Lakers came back from 20 points down to take the lead in the 4th quarter, there is no other place on earth that was more exciting than at the Staples Center.
Here are a few pics of the night. Will post some video that I took at the end of the game in my next posting. Can’t wait for Friday’s Game 2!!!!

Oh Man! Ever have one of those nights out where it just seems like everything worked in your favor. This show was one right up there with the best I have ever attended, in more ways than one.
Had never been to the Santa Barbara Bowl before. It sits in a residential section just around the corner from the High School and cut into a hillside with lush landscape abound.
We spent the day hiking up in the hills and checking out the scenery. Great vibe up there. Everybody seemed really friendly and happy to be out and about. The show started at 7pm, so we rolled in around 5:30 just so we could catch a quick nap before going in.
We found out that the best place where most people park is at the High School for $7. It is always a good idea to find alternate parking so that you are not bottlenecked afterwards trying to get out. I inadvertently missed the entrance to the high school parking lot and decided to circle around to make another go at it. Just as I turned the corner, there was the bowl. I thought that it must have been permit parking on the other side of the street because there were at least four empty spaces available. Turns out that they were ours for the taking. So not only were they free, but they were literally right across the street from the entrance, which made for the perfect quick getaway.
I mentioned in my last blog that we got the tickets the day before the show off of Craigslist. I paid a total of $70 for each ticket, even though the face value was $79.50 plust the $12.95 convenience charge, plus the, plus the, plus the….. The floor section was comprised of 13 rows before it hit the first walkway and made its way up the bowl. Our seats were in the 13th row, off to the right. Not too far off that it was obstructed, mind you. These were pretty sweet.
The first band that came on was an English band called YOUR VEGAS making their US debut. The lead singer had a broken foot, a result of being a “silly man-boy” and had to perform most of the set with his leg up on a chair. It brought some comedy because you could really tell he wanted to rock it, and his body was thrashing around that stupid chair. Overall, they sounded fantastic and I am sure you will hear more from them later.
As far as venue security goes, the ushers that we had were the most relaxed group I have seen. We asked one of them to take a picture of us just as DD was going on stage. She suggested that we come back one row, which technically was the 14th row of the floor, but it was situated three feet higher than the 13th row, complete with a railing. Since no one was in those seats, we jumped up and struck a pose. Then the usher said that we might as well enjoy those seats until some one comes and claims them (which they never did).
This new vantage point was literally head and shoulders above the rest of the floor seats. We had an unobstructed view of everything. It was as if you could reach out and touch the band. The squirrel was convinced that they were singing just for her!
Duran Duran played for almost two hours. They incorporated their new stuff seamlessly with their classics. They played them all. The whole 4,200 capacity was dancing the night away. They encored with RIO and they show ended promptly at 10pm due to the noise ordinance, which was fine.
As we exited the bowl, we realized that after we parked and went inside, the fire department coned off the street from the corner where the high school was to the next block down from our car. We literally had nobody to fight with for traffic all the way back to the freeway. It was as if we had our own private road. We were on the freeway in literally five minutes and back to Los Angeles in an hour.
I am sure the next night they played in Los Angeles was awesome as well at the Nokia theater, but for my money I will take the outdoor venues anytime.
Tonight kicks off the Dodgers Vs. Mets 3 game series. More to come on that next!!!
